Essentials in Curb Appeal Landscaping

Most people don't understand that good gardening not only helps with curb appeal, but it will increase the value of the estate or home by up to fifteen percent. Because this is a fairly major increase it is well worth looking into some easy techniques of garden design for your front yard whether you are planning to sell your home or you simply want to retain its value.

There are a number of ways you could create appealing landscaping plans that include form, points of focus, color, and texture. Many people think that curb appeal is simply a matter of planting some plants to fix up your yard and calling it a day. It's true that plants are an integral part of the landscape designer's arsenal and can do a lot on their own. Unfortunately, putting in the wrong plants and flowers can be more harmful than good.

There isn't much that looks sloppier than flowers that are grouped raggedly, and it's most assuredly not going to do much to increase the curb appeal of your front yard. Your landscaping ideas should consider the amount of maintenance that is involved in things like cleaning up flower beds and removing dead blossoms. You should also be sure to think about how the yard is going to look in autumn or the winter months when the plants and flowers have all died back.

You might want to think about using flowering plants judiciously, mostly relying on perennials which not only are low maintenance but have the advantage of coming back each and every year. Try putting in annuals for the gaps in color. For instance, if you've planted rose bushes, they will most likely be finished and faded by mid summer. If you think ahead and planted a few annuals in the flower beds with the roses, you will still have vibrant colors all summer.

For the center of your landscape plans, use semi-evergreen or evergreen bushes, plants, and shrubbery which will provide all year color and charm. Strive for a mixture of forms and characteristics, and buy flowers of various leaf structures and differing heights. Look at pictures of landscaping to determine how contrast can work for you. You could contrast rounded and little plants with thin and leafy ones, for a good look. Don't forget the value of evergreens, which will always be green and also come in several varieties and shapes. Alternating deciduous hedges or bushes with evergreens or semi evergreens is a wonderful way to mix pattern and design and create landscaping curb appeal.

Another good curb appeal landscaping trick is to create focus areas. Use shrubbery and hedges to border stairs, or put in a light standard at the top of the steps. Try using garden decor such as fountains, bird baths or pillars to create unusual landscaping ideas. Just take care not to overdo it. You could go a step further and build a water feature such as a waterfall that mimics those found in nature. This is a guaranteed way to build instant curb appeal with your landscaping and it's pretty simple if you are a do it yourselfer.

Always remember to keep things uncluttered and neat, and the lawn mowed. A large part of a good landscape design is having a well maintained yard. With these simple recommendations you will be on your way to creating beautiful landscaping that can add curb appeal.
